It has been reported that Hollywood star Tom Cruise wanted to join the crew of the US Space Shuttle Columbia, which crashed killing everyone on board in 2003.
According to Movie News Guide a deal was struck between Cruise and NASA; if he narrated the 2002 Space Station 3D documentary and helped with their website redesign, he would be allowed to go on the doomed flight.

For logistical reasons, he decided against joining the crew and once the disaster occurred, he lost all interest in training as an astronaut.
Space Station 3D directed, Toni Myers, said Cruise had his heart set on being an astronaut.
“Tom wanted to be an astronaut, he flies his own GulfStream IV Jet and he’s qualified as a pilot,” Myers explained. “He was very enthusiastic about doing ‘Space Station 3D,’ but the deal was he also wanted to fly in the Shuttle.”
However, the Mission Impossible star is still keen on space travel and plans on being part of Richard Branson’s first space flight – if it ever happens.
Cruise is also said to be very interested in reuniting with Jerry Bruckheimer for a Top Gun sequel in the near future. The classic 80s movie celebrated its 30 year anniversary this year and calls for a second installment have been growing strong.
