THE MANY FACES OF JOHNNY DEPP
With a staggering 75 film and television credits under his belt, Johnny Depp is one of the biggest stars in the world today. Most notably, he’s known for his often-dramatic makeovers for roles, and his latest role of James Bulger in Black Mass is no different. Here are some of our favourite faces of Johnny Depp throughout the years.
Alongside his role in 21 Jump Street, Depp’s portrayal of Edward Scissorhands in 1990 propelled him into the limelight. Edward Scissorhands, a science experiment nearing completion by his creator, who then died and left him with scissors for hands, is a timeless classic showing the differences between good and evil in the world. His portrayal of the sweet, innocent character is a stark contrast to his next notable role.
In 2003, we saw him tackle swashbuckling pirate Jack Sparrow, oozing humour, charisma and charm. Based on a ride at Walt Disney World Resort Florida of the same name, Pirates Of The Caribbean follows a group of pirates (headed by Captain Jack) attempting to rescue Elizabeth Swann from the cursed Captain Barbossa who kidnapped her.
The shoes of Willy Wonka are incredibly big ones to fill after Gene Wilder originally performed the role in 1971. In the 2005 remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, famous duo Tim Burton and Johnny Depp tackled the film head on, and Depp donned the suit of Willy Wonka. He sang his way around the Chocolate Factory, and welcomed us all into a world of pure imagination.
In his next role in 2007, Depp took somewhat of a 180 and went from frolicking in chocolate rivers to a stream of blood. Yes, Sweeny Todd saw Johnny transform into the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who plots revenge against a corrupt judge who wrongly imprisons him by befriending Miss Lovett and supplying her with human meat for her famous meat pies. All with accompanying songs. Cheery, eh?
In his seventh film with director Tim Burton, Depp takes a twisted turn on Alice In Wonderland’s Mad Hatter as he invites a now nineteen-year old Alice back into her very own Wonderland (or Underland as it is now called) she had visited as a child. Whilst she’s trying to end the Queen of Hearts’ reign over Wonderland, Depp provides a skittish, insane companion for Alice, and reminds us that we’re all a little bit mad here.
Depp’s most recent conquest, in cinemas today/tomorrow/27th November, sees him tackle the role of Irish gangster James Bulger, the brother to a state senate and one of the most dangerous gangsters in US history. Set in 1970s Boston, the film promises to be explosive, with an all star cast of actors and actresses such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Dakota Fanning. We can’t wait to watch!
