If you fancy playing online blackjack but don’t know where to start, we’re here to help. While the usual games of roulette and slot machines are very popular thanks to the super simple gameplay, card games such as blackjack can be a confusing prospect for those without any experience.

In reality, blackjack is a very simple game to understand, even more so when you play live dealer blackjack as you’re ‘walked’ through the games to some extent and can take it at your own pace. In an actual bricks and mortar casino there is no instant help facility and the pace will also depend on the other players involved and the dealer.

At SuperCasino you can also play live dealer blackjack for fun, allowing you to practice and get to grips with the rules of the game.

How to Play Blackjack

The simple aim of blackjack is to get closer than the dealer to a hand of 21 (without going over). You begin with two cards each, and have to decide whether you want to stick with that hand or take a further card (a hit). If you go over 21 then you automatically lose, so this is where the skill and nerve comes in. Face cards in blackjack are valued at 10 and Aces at 1 or 10 – whichever works better for your hand. You can take further cards if you have a low denomination hand, but remember that going over that magic 21 will put you out of the game (bust!) instantly.

Blackjack Strategy

One crucial element of blackjack strategy is the first ‘reveal’ where you get to see one of the dealer’s cards. Good mathematicians can work out the probabilities of the different denominations for the second card, but, for the rest of us, basic common sense has to be applied. When you think about the types of cards, 4 out of the 13 card types have a value of 10. This means that an unknown card has about a 1 in 3 chance of being a 10. This info can hold a lot of power. For example, should you have a 12 card, you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting a 10 card on your next hit – which would take you to 22 and bust.

Split Hands

One way to add interest for a confident player is to split a hand – which you can do if you are given two cards of the same value. This allows you to double the bet but also double the potential win. It’s great if you feel you’ve got a decent starting card and want to add extra excitement.

The premise of blackjack is simple to grasp, despite its reputation as one of the more ‘serious’ casino games. You can start to play with just a basic understanding of the rules and as your confidence builds, try out various different strategies.
