The odds are bound to be in the bookies, or houses, favour all the time – after all, they have a business to run! However, that doesn’t mean you will never be able to win! Whether you’re a dab hand at poker or have Lady Luck looking over your shoulder at the roulette wheel, you never know when you might win big in the casino. The SuperCasino infographic tells us more about some of the characters through the ages who didn’t believe that the odds were against them, and chose to use a combination of maths, science and luck to try and beat the system and walk away better off.

Take The Eudaemons, for example. In the 1970s, this community, led by J. Doyne Farmer and Norman Packard, tried to prove that the roulette wheel could be beaten… using science. With a bit of knowledge of physics and monitoring the spinning trajectory, they managed to beat the wheel and walk away with $10,000. Not bad for a day’s work!

However, that ten grand is nothing compared to what Joseph Jagger managed to pocket from a stint in the casino back in 1837. He bagged a massive £14,000 (which, in today’s money, equates to £700,000!) at the Monte Carlo casino, using a combination of maths and observation. Again, during the 19th century, Poker Alice – an apparent Ace in her field – managed to win over $250,000 during her card-playing career, leaving her male opponents well and truly ‘flushed’.

Back in the 21st century, we have seen a number of prolific gamblers hitting the headlines, including Archie Karas who apparently turned a measly $50 into a whopping $40m in two years. He may have gotten a bit too big for his boots though, having lost his fortune playing Baccarat and dice, before being arrested last year for marking cards.

We see people from all backgrounds enjoying a stint in the casinos – even the celebs are at it, with some – Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire included – kicking up quite a storm at the poker tables.

Who’s going to be the next big winner? You never know, it could be you!
